WTF?

A friend of mine has a fourteen month old baby. She is pregnant again, four months gone. She also is a smoker. She smoked all the way through her first pregnancy, but once the baby was born, she did not and does not smoke around her. Now that she's pregnant again, she has no intentions of giving up smoking. But she won't smoke around the baby once it's born, because that would be bad for him or her.

Is there some logic there that I am missing?

Its all about the lungs, innit? They don't breath in the womb. Oh, and conveniently ignore the direct flow of pernicious toxins through the more direct route.

But, it is an addiction so she should get help to give up - although it sounds like she doesn't really want to.

Sounds like a very intelligent lady...

When my sister got pregnant everytime she even thought of smoking, she threw up! She said that it was better than any therapy, nicotine patches etc.

Then she had 5 more (Kids that is, not cigarettes) so she just didn't bother starting again :-)

I agree with what WFI said. It is an addiction, but how do you stop yourself from choking her to death ;-)

Um...I don't even know what to say to that. Really, that is so unbelievably stupid I have no idea how to address it.

Well I'm just delighted for her.

Seriously I have 2 close friends who did/are doing that exzact same thing!!
One auctually got told by a midwife that because she has been a smoker for so long it would be too stressful for her to stop cold turky.
The other is in real denyal that there is any harm in smoking and I have had some serious talks with her about it, I mean she is really smart and does everything ese right.
Its the addiction, the brain tells you its ok to do.

WFI - That's it, it's all about the lungs.

Mick - Wow, six kids. She wouldn't have time to smoke even if she wanted to!

Kim - you and me both.

Xbox - Yep, gladdens my heart every time I see her lighting up.

PIB - A friend of mine told me that she was told this by her obstetrician, when she was a 42 year old pregnant smoker. I couldn't believe that any medical professional could give that kind of advice.
